Just Sold! the Hood-Behr House (391 Maple) – Plymouth Historic Italianate Victorian Home with 3 Bedrms, 1.5 Baths, 1632 Sqft (Closed at $290,000)

We are privileged to present this rare offering and opportunity to weave yourself into the fabric of Plymouth history.  Assume the stewardship of this timeless jewel and home.  An Italianate Victorian, an exquisite garden, three second floor bedrooms, one and one half bathrooms including a powder room with Pewabic tile backsplash, all while located walking distance near to downtown Plymouth’s shops, dining, entertainment, and events. Even closer, you’ll find Plymouth’s expansive Fairground Park where the fair was once held right next to this home until 1904.

Originally built in 1879 by John Hood, this home is an example of Italianate architecture popular in the United States from the 1830’s through the 1880’s.  John Hood returned from the Civil War and bought the land from John Kellogg.  Previous owners of the land included William Starkweather, Tim Lyons, and Ben Holbrock.

The original home is a square, two story house with a simple hipped roof. There are wide over hanging eaves adorned with large decorative brackets. The tall, arched hooded windows are so indicative of this style of architecture. Around the 1880’s, the rear one-story wing was added – possibly as a carriage house or kitchen. This space has since been transformed into a large family room with a cork floor and radiant floor heating.

In 1988, the American Association of University Women designated the Hood-Behr house a Plymouth Landmark.
